The city itself
Hanoi is dense, flat, and full of macro sites. Walking from Hoan Kiem to the French Quarter, or riding Grab to Tay Ho, is not a coverage puzzle on Viettel. What travelers notice instead is indoor loss: tube houses, thick hotels, and basements of shopping malls. If Maps will not load at the back of a cafe, the fix is usually the front door, not a new APN. The Vietnam line should be the only line allowed to use mobile data. The home SIM stays on for SMS.
A normal Hanoi day is maps, a handful of Grab rides, chat, and photos. That pattern fits in 5GB with room to spare. The day that does not fit is a laptop on hotspot for a full work session plus video calls. Hotspot is allowed. It spends the same daily bucket. There is no separate hotspot cap on our plan, and there is also no slowed unlimited mode when the bucket ends.
Leaving the city
The airport road north to Noi Bai is covered. The expressway toward Ha Long is covered in the ordinary sense of a national highway, with short dips at cuts and bridges. Ninh Binh’s tourist core, Tam Coc and the boat docks, is a town, not a wilderness. The moment the trip becomes a mountain trip, read the Sapa and Ha Giang pages instead of assuming the Old Quarter experience continues. Viettel is the network people choose for that drive because its rural grid is the wide one. It is not immune to valleys.
Download offline maps for the north before you go, even with a working eSIM. A tunnel or a gorge is a bad time to discover that the next turn instruction needed a fresh tile. Offline maps are a few hundred megabytes once, which is cheap against a 5GB day, and they keep working when the radio does not.
Published speeds, and what they are not
We do not publish an eSim For Vietnam speed test for Ba Dinh or for Long Bien. The numbers below are national. Use them to compare operators, not to predict the cafe you are sitting in.
If you want the arrival sequence for Terminal T2, the Noi Bai guide covers the counter, the published Wi-Fi name, and the ride into Hoan Kiem. Coverage and arrival are different jobs.
