Towns you can message from
Ha Giang city is a real provincial capital with ordinary Viettel coverage. Dong Van, Meo Vac, and the other overnight towns on the four-day loop are where phones wake up again: you send the day’s photos, you read the next homestay pin, you check the weather. Plan your calls and your cloud uploads for those stops. The road is for riding.
Passes you should not trust
Ma Pi Leng and the other high sections are famous for a reason that has nothing to do with telecoms, and the telecoms follow the terrain anyway. A tower on one ridge does not see around the next one. You will watch the indicator go from LTE to nothing and back inside a few minutes. That pattern is the loop. It is also why an eSIM you can install before you ever reach Hanoi matters: you are not going to solve a missing profile in a town whose SIM shop may be a single counter with a lunch break.
Viettel is the network this road is ridden on. That sentence is the local knowledge, and it lines up with Opensignal’s national coverage-experience gap. It is not a promise of 56.7 Mbps on a cliff. The 56.7 Mbps figure is the national everyday download from Opensignal’s August 2026 report. Quoting it as a Ha Giang speed would be false. We quote it below as a national comparison and leave a marker where a local published test would go.
- Save the offline map and the day’s track while you are still in Ha Giang city or on hotel Wi-Fi.
- Charge from the bike or a pack before the long leg. A phone hunting for a cell in the cold dies quickly, and a dead phone looks like a network failure.
- Share your next overnight with someone before you leave the last town, not from the pass.
- Keep data roaming off so the phone stays loyal to Viettel instead of searching for a roaming partner that is not the product you bought.
5GB a day is more than the loop requires if you are not uploading video from every overlook. Photos sent at the homestay, a bit of music in town, and maps that were pre-downloaded are a light day. The people who burn 5GB are uploading originals over a weak cell, which is slow and costly in battery as well as data. Send them when you are back on a strong town signal, or wait for the reset at 23:59.
