When an APN edit is the right tool
An APN is the gateway name the phone uses once it is already on the radio. It does not create coverage, it does not refill a spent 5GB day, and it does not turn a home SIM into Viettel. Edit it when the Vietnam line shows service and every page times out, or when someone previously saved a foreign APN onto that profile. If the line says No Service, go back to the no-data checklist. You are not at the APN step yet.
The values
- Name: Viettel. This label is for you. The network ignores it.
- APN: v-internet. Lower case, with the hyphen. This is the value both common public Viettel setting lists agree on.
- Username: empty.
- Password: empty.
- Proxy and port: empty.
- APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6 if Android asks and you are creating the APN by hand. On iPhone you usually only see the APN string.
Save, select that APN so it is the active one, and reboot the phone once. Then load a plain page with the VPN off. If it works, stop editing. Extra APN types copied from random blogs, especially ones that promise a hidden speed tier, are not part of this plan. Our 5GB cap is a plan rule. An APN cannot raise it.
iPhone and Android paths
iPhone hides Cellular Data Network until a profile is installed. Open the Vietnam plan, then Cellular Data Network, and put v-internet in the APN field under mobile data. Leave the username and password lines blank even if the keyboard suggests one. Android, including Samsung and Pixel, shows a list of APNs. The profile may already contain v-internet. If a second APN named something else is selected, select the Viettel one or add it. On Samsung, confirm you are editing the eSIM and not the physical SIM. Editing the home SIM’s APN while abroad can break the home line’s SMS path, which you still want for bank codes.
After a successful test, leave the screen alone. Toggling the APN every time a cafe is slow will not beat a congested cell. If v-internet is set, roaming is off, data is on the right line, and you still have no session after a reboot, that is a support screenshot, not a fifth APN. After the APN is correct, stop. Further edits copied from forums, especially extra APN types that claim to unlock hotspot or a hidden 5G tier, are not part of this tourist plan. Hotspot is already allowed. 5G appears when Viettel’s site and your phone both support it, which in the August 2026 Opensignal report was still a small share of time even for Viettel. An APN string cannot widen that footprint.
