A planning table, not a lab result

Apps change their bitrates, and a weak cell makes the same video cost more time without always costing more data. Use these as ranges so you can see whether 5GB is the right ceiling. They are not measurements eSim For Vietnam recorded on Viettel.

  • Maps navigation: on the order of 5–20MB per hour if the route is already cached, more if the app downloads a new city.
  • A Grab ride: usually a few megabytes for the pin, the driver track, and chat. A day of rides is small next to one video.
  • Messaging text and stickers: negligible. A voice note is small. A one-minute video call is often tens of megabytes, and a long one belongs in the video row.
  • Music streaming: roughly 40–150MB per hour depending on quality. A commute’s worth of music is fine. A twelve-hour bus at high quality is a real slice of the day.
  • Social scrolling: easily 100–300MB in an hour if video autoplay is on. This is the habit that empties a plan without a single “download.”
  • Video: standard definition can be a few hundred megabytes an hour. HD is often around 1–3GB an hour. A movie will threaten or finish the 5GB by itself.
  • Hotspot for a laptop: treat a video meeting as video, and a file sync as whatever the file weighs. The laptop does not get a separate 5GB.

Days that fit, and days that do not

A city day of walking navigation, three Grab rides, photos sent to family, and an hour of music is commonly under 1GB and sometimes under 500MB. You will not think about the cap. A beach day with social video autoplay for two hours and a tethered laptop in the afternoon can cross 5GB before dinner. The plan’s behavior at that line is abrupt on purpose: high-speed data ends. You do not limp along at a speed that still sort of loads email. Either you are under 5GB or you are on Wi-Fi until 23:59 Vietnam time.

The 30-day plan at $18.99 is the best price per day if you will actually be in Vietnam that long, and if you use the full 5GB every day the arithmetic is about $0.13 per gigabyte of that 150GB. Most travelers will not use 150GB. They buy the 30-day plan because the trip is long, not because they need the theoretical total. The 7-day plan at $9.99 is the short trip. Mixing durations in one cart is allowed if two people need different lengths. Each QR is its own line and its own 5GB.

How to stay inside the day

  • Download offline maps on Wi-Fi before a mountain day or a boat.
  • Set photos to back up on Wi-Fi only.
  • Turn off video autoplay, or accept that scrolling is the data spend.
  • Put the phone’s data warning near 4GB so you still have a ride home.
  • Do laptop updates on hotel Wi-Fi. Use hotspot for the hour you are outside.

None of those habits change coverage. A saved map does not need Viettel. A live traffic layer does. On the Ha Giang loop and on a Ha Long boat, the winning move is to spend almost no data while the signal is bad, then upload when you are back on a town cell. The allowance will still be there if you did not stream on the bus. It resets at 23:59 even if you saved it, so there is no prize for ending the day at zero other than not being cut off.
